4 simple ways to use your voice after Orlando

  1. The language we use to talk about the Latinx community in this country is consistently tinged with negative bias. The rhetoric that we use around our Latinx brothers and sisters encourages the stigmatization a significant portion of residents in this nation. The most egregious example is the phrase “illegal immigrant”, when “undocumented immigrant” exists for the same use, just without alienating anyone.
  2. Part of using your voice is knowing when not to, too. Now is the time to center the voices of the LGBT Latinx community over all others. Don’t know how exactly to do so? Learn about how to be a good ally and how to use your privilege (straight privilege, white privilege) for good.
  3. Don’t allow the actions of this man become your reflection of his entire religion. Take a stand on Islamophobia when you hear it and help amplify the diverse stories of the Muslim community, including queer Muslims. Sharp, hateful rhetoric designed to turn us away from our Muslim brothers and sisters cannot go unchecked. Dangerous Islamophobic will only divide us and make us weaker.
  4. Remember that what happened in Orlando did not take place in a vacuum. The tragedy took place not solely because of the actions of one man, but because our society creates an environment that allows hateful biases to fester. Take the implicit bias quiz to find out what biases you may have, and then follow it up with Look Different’s week-long bias cleanse to do your part in seeing every single person through the same lens.
