asked:
What can be done in the LGBTQI community so that it is more inclusive of people under the bi+ and trans* umbrellas, and not just serve just the needs of the cis LG parts of the community?

For starters, hire talented bi and trans people for decision making positions in LGBTQI organizations, and especially bi and trans people of color, who are even more underrepresented, invisible and marginalized in our community organizations. Do a better job of including bi and trans people on your boards and support them since there are still prejudices aimed at bi and trans people in our community.  Talk to bi and trans people in your communities and see what their needs are.
And most importantly, don’t erase us from TBLGQI history or belittle our contributions to it.  That annoys us when LG people do that.

Inclusion requires intention and mindfulness. The number one reason why many trans people, especially trans people of color, feel excluded in the movement is because of the absence of engagement with these particular subgroups that the community at large claims to serve. Meaningful involvement of the bi and trans* requires inclusions on all levels: from volunteers to staff to management to the executive team. In addition, advocate for inclusion when we don’t see bi and trans people at the table and resist tokenism — make sure you are inviting more than one bi and one trans person to the table. It is that simple.

There is a lot of great work being done in all parts of the country and in all of the various queer communities. Asking a question as you have is a good start. But then take some time to explore online and see who is doing good work that fits into your world view. Use your own vision and do your own analysis. Don’t just support the work of the biggest more visible organizations; look for amazing smaller groups or even individuals who are inspirational (to you) and ask what work they think is amazing.
